You have been invited to take part in the research project ‘Reading the news on social media’. Before making a decision on whether you want to participate or not, please read the following text carefully.

Aim of the project
This study is focused on the processing and evaluation of social-media content. This research will be carried out by researchers of Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

Potential risks and inconveniences
In the participation in this research aren’t any physical, legal or economic risks involved.

Participation is voluntary
Participation to this study is entirely voluntary. It is possible for you to stop at any time during the task, or refuse that your research data can be used for the research, without stating reasons.

If you decide to terminate your cooperation, the information that you have already provided will be used in the research project up to the moment of withdrawal of your consent.

Confidentiality of personal data
We do everything to guarantee the protection of your privacy as well as possible. No confidential information or personal data is transmitted from or about you in any way, so that someone will be able to recognize you. Anonymized data and summarizing statistics will be used in the publications.

Your data will solely be collected and shared for the sake of this research. This means that the data will be shared with researchers from the Erasmus University Rotterdam.

The data collected in the context of this study will be safely stored on the secure (encrypted) data carriers of researchers. The research data is stored for a period of at least 10 years after the publication of the results. After this period has expired, your data will be deleted or anonymized so that they can no longer be traced to a person.

The research data will be made available if this is necessary (e.g. when needed for the scientific integrity check). The data will only be anonymously available to persons outside the research group.

Finally, this research has been reviewed and approved by the ethics review committee DPECS, of the Erasmus University.

Acknowledgements
By proceeding with the task you acknowledge the following:

  1. I am sufficiently informed about the research by means of a separate information sheet. I have read this information sheet and had then had the opportunity to ask questions. These questions have been answered sufficiently.
  2. My participation to this study is voluntary. There is no explicit or implicit compulsion for me to participate in this. It is clear to me that I can terminate participation at any time, without a reason. I don’t have to answer questions if I don’t want to.
  3. I give permission to process the data that is collected from me during the research. (This data includes your answers to questions in the task, reflecting your opinion about news articles presented during the task, as well as questions about your personal social-media use, your native country, gender, and age)
  4. I give permission that the research data collected from me can be safely stored and used for future research by the EUR in other research fields and for educational purposes.
